The Cheltenham Festival started yesterday and we saw an exceptional performance by Sprinter Sacre when winning the Racing Post Arkle Chase by a convincing 7 lengths. The time of the race stacks up well with previous winners, but it was his immense jumping that caught the eye, his second last fence jump was pure enjoyment for any national hunt racing fan.
Cinders and Ashes won the Supreme Novice hurdle and proved that speed doesn’t win this race! His previous speed figures have been pedestrian and I am sure yesterday’s wont stack up to a decent one once I have evaluated the race, however his battling nature has to be admired.
Hurricane Fly didn’t turn up? I do not think he is the same horse as last year, however the time of the race and the fractions look solid, so credit to Rock On Ruby. I know I will not rate the race as high as normal due to Overturn, I will use him as a benchmark, he generally runs to his mark.
The handicaps were not to the standard of previous years, however Alfie Sherrin was well backed and proved his handicap was well out, you have to love Jonjo and McManus in these races, some would see it as blatantly taking the piss and holding a horse back, for me it just makes me laugh that they can get away with it on a regular basis, hats off to them. He probably out stayed the field to with not many getting home.
Quevega won her fourth mares hurdle and is a special lady, lets hope she can return next year! She came out on the ratings well clear and with a rating that you just don’t see very often, she also came up on all bar one of our select betting systems.
